The session began with a warm welcome, introductions, and prayer. The children were then invited to guess the monthly theme after listening to a song. Their thoughtful answers included words such as gratitude, thankfulness, and contentment.
The official theme was then revealed: Contentment.
Together, the children explored what contentment means in everyday life. They shared simple but meaningful thoughts, such as being thankful for what one has, recognising that what we already have is enough, and not always demanding more.
The key Bible verse for the lesson was:“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
1 Timothy 6:6This verse helped the children understand that contentment is not just about having fewer wants; it is about having a heart that trusts God, honours Him, and appreciates His provision.
The children were encouraged to think about items they had recently received or hoped to receive. Some examples included gadgets, toys, pets, and other special gifts. These examples created a lively and relatable discussion. The lesson gently guided the children to see that it is not wrong to desire good things, but our hearts must not become controlled by wanting more and more. True contentment is learning to say, “Thank You, God, for what I already have,” while also trusting that God knows what is best for us.This is an important lesson in a world where children are constantly exposed to advertisements, comparison, peer pressure, and the temptation to measure happiness by possessions. At Mama Africa Book Box, we are helping children pause, reflect, and grow in godly wisdom.
The children also learned from the story of the Israelites in the wilderness, where God provided manna from heaven.Through this Bible story, they discovered important lessons:God provides for His children. We should not complain when things do not happen exactly as we want.We can trust God daily. We should not hoard out of fear.Gratitude helps us recognise God’s goodness. The story of manna reminded the children that God’s provision is not always about giving us everything we want immediately. Sometimes, He teaches us to depend on Him one day at a time.
The session included a short video explanation of contentment, followed by a discussion on what the children had learned. It was encouraging to hear them reflect on thankfulness, trusting God, and avoiding complaints.Their homework for the next meeting was simple but powerful:Write down two things they are grateful for.Write down two things they are trusting God to provide in the future. This activity helps children develop both gratitude and faith. They learn to look back and say, “God has been good,” while looking forward and saying, “God can be trusted.”
